New Snow King Apartments & Park Shop Complete

October 16 – The Town of Jackson, Teton County, and their joint Parks & Recreation Department are pleased to announce the completion of the SPET-funded Snow King Apartments and Park Shop across from the fairgrounds. This innovate building includes two floors of employee housing for government workers and two floors of storage and maintenance for snowplows and other machinery.

The two upper floors have 26 units including 9 one-bedrooms, 17 studios. All one-bedroom units include washers, dryers, and dishwashers and there is one 710 square foot unit with ADA finishings. The studio units, anticipated to house START Bus drivers in the winter and other seasonal employees in the summer, are furnished and include shared access to a kitchen, lounge, and laundry.

All the units were designed with “livability” in-mind, catering to ways that people in our community live, work, and recreate. The apartments use space efficiently, have a lot of windows, and include light colors, cove heating, ceiling fans, durable flooring, large bathrooms, and storage space.

Town Assistant Manager Roxanne Robinson notes that, “The Snow King Apartments are already critical for recruiting and retaining employees and will provide a cost-effective option for housing seasonal staff and interns.”

Parks & Recreation Director Steve Ashworth oversaw construction and emphasizes that, “With this project, we were able to adapt to help meet our community’s need for affordable employee housing. This is a smart use of space that combines a variety of uses under one roof.”

The Park Maintenance and Storage takes up the first floor and basement, and will house Park administration offices, a staff locker room, garage equipment, and tool storage. The current Park Maintenance Shop was built in 1979 when there was 1 full time Park employee. At that point, Parks and Recreation was responsible for 4 parks in town. Today, a team of 16 employees maintain 19 parks, oversee 50 miles of pathways, provide winter trail grooming, and plow snow off sidewalks throughout the winter.

Due to COVID-19, a public Open House for the building was cancelled but a video highlighting the various elements of this innovative building will be available on the Town and County’s websites after thevideo “debuts” at the November 2nd Joint Information meeting where electeds will view it. Watch it to see your SPET-dollars at work!
