You may have noticed the recent addition of blue recycling bins throughout the core district of downtown Jackson. These efforts to divert recyclable material from landfill have proven to be quite successful in this concentrated area of the core downtown.
"These 20 recycling bins have been a fantastic addition to downtown Jackson, giving our visitors not only a place to recycle, but also a sense of our community's environmental commitment, said Kelly French the owner of Curbside Recycling. "We are excited to be part of this great step forward on our Road to Zero Waste."
The Town Council approved the purchase and servicing of these recycling containers last year with the plan to place the bins and launch the service at the start of the summer. The bins were fabricated in Rexburg, Idaho at Premier Powder Coating and Custom Fabrication. The design was replicated from the trash receptacles that were initially designed by Jackson Hole Public Art.
The new blue recycling containers have all been placed next to existing grey trash containers, giving visitors and residents an option for landfill or diversion. Twice a week Curbside Recycling empties the collections and transports the materials to Integrated Solid Waste and Recycling where the aluminum and plastics are sorted and recycled.
At the conclusion of the summer, town staff plans to assess the program and to evaluate if these efforts should be expanded beyond the current scope.
