As a public service announcement when subzero temperatures persist, the Town recommends community members consider their pipes. As temperatures drop, especially with less snow blanketing the valley than usual, frost can move deeper into the ground and lead to pipes freezing. Consider some or all of these steps to avoid frozen pipes and keep your water flowing.
- Check basement and crawl space vents to make sure they are closed and insulated to prevent freezing in the basement or under the house.
- Check to make sure pipes are properly insulated.
- Seal areas that allow cold air into your home.
- Wrap exposed pipes with insulated foam sleeves.
- Use water frequently to keep pipes from freezing.
- Open cabinet doors so heat can surround pipes.
- Leave heat on at 50 degrees or higher all the time.
- If you are away, plan to have someone check your house periodically.
- If your pipes have frozen in the past, run water at a pencil width or slightly smaller, ideally in a laundry room sink or first floor bathroom, as often as you can.
- If your pipes freeze or burst, shut off the main water valve, call a certified plumber, and call the Town's Public Work Department to have your connection valve shut off too.
