The START (Southern Teton Area Rapid Transit) public transportation system saves fuel through eliminating auto traffic by persons choosing to ride the bus. It is the goal of START Bus to increase fuel saved through transit ridership. The chart below shows estimated net savings and related information from 2006 through 2017. It is estimated that 2,777,922 gallons of fuel have been saved since 2006 through riders choosing utilize public transportation as opposed to driving an automobile.
START Fleet: The START Board has also made a commitment to reducing emissions from the transportation sector and improving air quality in Teton County, through the introduction of zero emission electric buses to the START bus fleet. Continuing our past effort with Hybrid buses, this program supports the Jackson/Teton County Comprehensive Plan Common Value-Ecosystem Stewardship, sharing the vision to preserve and protect the area’s ecosystem.
This program establishes the goal to transition the START bus fleet to 40% electric by 2022. START looks forward to reporting on this goal as we implement our success in obtaining Federal Transit Administration Low/No Emission funding to aid us in purchasing electric powered vehicles. We also look forward to pursuing all forms of alternative fuels for our needs, including the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles.
