Town Planner Tyler Valentine Certified by American Institute of Certified Planners

Tyler Valentine passed his American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) exam and is now, officially, a certified planner. Certified Planners have at least four years of experience on the job, pledge to uphold standards of practice, ethics, and professional conduct, and to keep their skills current by regularly pursuing continuing education. AICP planners are experienced, knowledgeable, and committed to ethical planning practices.

Planning Director Paul Anthony shares that, “Tyler Valentine continues to grow into a very well-rounded planner who cares deeply about the community and provides excellent customer service. The Town of Jackson is lucky to have him.” AICP planners subscribe to the Institute’s Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct to always act with integrity and serve the public interest with compassion for the welfare of all people. The AICP recognizes that the basic and aspirational values of society can, at times, compete with one another. Certified planners know that ethical judgment often requires conscious balancing, based on the facts and context of a particular situation and on the precepts of AICP’s ethical code. Certified Planners commit to uphold that ethical code and to the goal of building better, more inclusive communities with an overall responsibility to the public. The principles AICP certified planners
aspire to include the following.

  • Conscious acknowledgment of the rights of others.
  • Focused concern for the long-range consequences of present actions.
  • Putting attention on the interrelatedness of decisions.
  • Committing to provide timely, adequate, clear, and accurate information about planning issues to stakeholders and decision makers.
  • Providing people the opportunity to have a meaningful impact on the development of plans and programs affecting them.
  • Seeking social justice by working to expand choice and opportunity for everyone, recognizing a special responsibility to plan for the needs of the disadvantaged and to promote racial and economic integration, urging for the alteration of policies, institutions, and decisions that oppose such needs.
  • Promoting excellence of design and endeavor to conserve and preserve the integrity and heritage of the natural and built environment.
  • Dealing fairly with all participants in the planning process.

The AICP Code and Principles help planners negotiate the tough ethical and moral dilemmas they sometimes face on the job. Certified planners have verified their academic and professional achievements, submitted essays that demonstrate their experience meets established criteria for professional planning practices, and passed a rigorous, comprehensive examination of their abilities. AICP Certification is an assurance of quality and the town of Jackson is proud of Valentine and glad to be able to add another AICP certified-planner to its ranks with Planning Director Paul Anthony and Community Development Director, Tyler Sinclair.

Sinclair notes that, “Tyler Valentine has put in the hard work and hours to excel in the planning profession and we’re extremely pleased to have him on the Town of Jackson team. We look forward to many more years of success with Mr. Valentine guiding individuals and businesses through our planning process with the ethical lens that AICP certification ensures.”
