Police BlotterJuly 1, 2020Hey Jackson! We saw a number of thefts for this date. We encourage everyone to lock up your stuff. Locked those apartments, lock those cars, and lock those bikes. There is a person or persons out there engaging in some 5-finger discounts and midnight auto.On that note, does anyone remember the stolen vehicle in 20063249, reported on June 26, 2020? Solved! A big thank you to one of our brothers at the sheriff’s office who stopped the suspect walking down the highway. The man was a dead-ringer for the one we had on surveillance video getting out of the stolen car. Detective Figueroa followed up with the man the next day. They had a very nice conversation in which the man admitted to stealing the vehicle and taking some items out of it. Detective Figueroa was able to return the stolen items to the victim, who did not wish the man to be prosecuted for Burglary, but wrote the 50 year old Jackson, WY man a citation for the Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle, (call it Joy-Riding). So why not arrest him for Grand Theft Auto? That charge requires proving an intent to permanently deprive the owner of their property. If all you did was drive the car across town and abandon it in another location, proving that element generally isn’t possible. On to the blotter!20070075: On July 1, 2020, at 3:18 p.m., RO Schmidl responded to a report of Destruction of Property.
